Mike Asplet

I am standing for the Board because I want to contribute to a school community that is already doing great things – and has the potential to do even more.

A Wellingtonian born and raised, I currently have a daughter in year 2 and another excited to start at KNS this year. Professionally, I am a trained lawyer with a specialisation in human rights, and have held senior roles in several government departments, most recently leading work in children’s policy. Across my career, I have focused on delivering practical, enduring outcomes that don't leave anyone behind.

I also bring experience from across the education sector. I have served on the board of an early childhood education centre here in Karori for several years; the last two as Chairperson. At the same time, I have lectured law and policy to master's level at Victoria University and internationally, and taught in professional development courses, including with the NZ Defence Force.

Throughout these roles, I have seen what can be achieved when we work together. From the Ministry, teachers, staff, parents, whānau, to our children themselves, I believe KNS is more than just a place of learning; it is an integral part of our community. The Board plays a critical role in bringing these parts together to achieve strong wellbeing and academic outcomes for our kids.

As a candidate, I stand for:

Most of all, I believe in developing every child to reach their unique potential, whether that’s in the classroom, on the netball court, or in their own creative expression. As a Board, we should be doing all we can to support our kids in believing, achieving, together.

Like you, I care deeply about the future direction of KNS and its community. If elected to the Board, I’ll bring a professional approach, a collaborative spirit, and a focus on what’s best for our kids.
