Nathan Smith
Tēnā koutou katoa,
As a proud Māori parent, long-time Karori resident, and current board member of Karori Normal School, I am standing for re-election to continue contributing to the future of our kura and our tamariki.
My career has spanned over 15 years in senior leadership, strategy, and transformation roles across government, health, and community sectors. Currently, I serve as Director Māori Digital, Data & Insights – Pou Raraunga Matihiko Māori at MBIE, where I lead strategy and systems that empower Māori communities. I’ve also worked as a consultant, advisor, and executive across organisations such as Wellington City Council, Oranga Tamariki, Plunket, and the NZ Defence Force. I bring deep experience in governance, stakeholder engagement, and building inclusive systems that enable all whānau and communities to thrive.
I have a strong understanding of how governance works, both from my current position on the Karori Normal School Board and from years of experience advising at senior levels. I take a collaborative and future-focused approach to board leadership, always grounded in transparency, integrity, and equity.
Karori is a special place. I love the strength and diversity of our community. I believe in public education as a cornerstone of a just society, and I am committed to ensuring that every child has access to the tools, opportunities, and support they need to thrive – academically, emotionally, and culturally.
As Māori, I am firmly committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi within our school. I believe inclusive and culturally sustaining education benefits every learner. By honouring all cultures and identities within our school community, we create a sense of belonging that empowers our tamariki for life beyond the classroom.
Our teachers are vital to this journey, and as a board member I will continue to support and advocate for their wellbeing, development, and recognition.
Karori Normal School has a proud history and a bright future. I would be honoured to continue serving our school and our whānau with care, clarity, and commitment.
Ngā mihi nui,
Nathan Kahu Smith
